Reports to: President of the Geneva Health Forum
Supervises: 1 permanent staff in Geneva and coordinates logistics company and other external suppliers
Salary: based on experience
Background
The Geneva Forum: Towards Global Access to Health (Geneva Health Forum) is a joint initiative launched by the University Hospitals of Geneva and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva, in partnership with the major international organizations active in health in Geneva and around the world. Held every two years, the international Geneva Health Forum brings together the major stakeholders in global access to health – from field workers to policy-makers. The GHF, as a developing global network for international and inter-sectoral dialogue, has the vision of facilitating the strengthening of health systems and basic health services, thus striving to keep global access to health on the international agenda.
The Geneva Health Forum is currently in a repositioning phase and requires a head of operations to ensure that the GHF not only remains a major international event but firmly places itself on the map as the main European event in global health. A new thematic axis on gender and access to health is to be developed within this framework.
The secretariat of the Geneva Health Forum is hosted by the Division of International and Humanitarian Medicine of the University Hospitals of Geneva.
Position Objective
The primary objective of the position of the head of operations is to coordinate the event process from budget and planning to communication and press matters. This role is key to the raising the profile of the GHF and for the strategy to support that process. The GHF has a small team of highly motivated people and requires an energetic and highly organized person to fulfil this role.
The second objective of this position is to participate in the programme of the GHF by developing a gender and access to health axis. This requires the capacity to understand the main issues in the field of global health related to gender and to translate these into the programme.
The head of operations will work closely with the following:
- the Programme Director of the GHF for programme development
- the President of the GHF for overall strategy and coordination
- the Financial Director of the GHF for the budget issues
- the external partner for communication, fundraising and strategy for ensuring that GHF values are upheld and as the main liaison between the GHF and the external partner
Specific Job Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Geneva Health Forum President the Head of Operations
Management and planning:
- ensure proper project planning to ensure that all aspects of the GHF are planned, budgeted and carried out within the established deadlines
- contract, coordinate and supervise external companies hired for specific services related to the GHF
- coordinate and follow up the fundraising search process, negotiate and coordinate the results of agreements when necessary
- establish and manage the GHF budget on a day to day basis
- coordinate the selection of invited speakers and travel grantees, take key decisions on the logistics of their travel and stay
- liaise with government officials for obtaining visas
- write and/or edit all official documents
- promote the GHF ‘marketplace area’ to targeted stakeholders and coordinate with the logistics company the spaces and invoicing for this
- promote the GHF and expand the base of stakeholders
Under the supervision of the Geneva Health Forum Programme Director
Content and contacts
- develop a concept for ‘gender and access to health’
- create a mapping of actors in gender, health and development around the world
- seek out frontline initiatives in this field; identify and liaise the most outstanding individuals
- support the programme director in the development of the thematic axes and their differential communication
- support the selected speakers in the content of their messages and their presentation skills
Qualifications
- Experience: 5-10 years in a similar or related position in the field of health, preferably global health or development
- Experience in or capacity to develop content on gender and access to health
- English mother tongue with good command of French
- Capacity to communicate appropriately in diverse domains (development cooperation agencies; civil society; private sector, high level individuals; service providers)
- Strong background in event management
- Experience in publications
- Flexible, highly organized, communicative, trustworthy, and strategic thinker
- Dedication to the GHF vision and aims
- Swiss or EU working permit required
